Significant Findings from the Ancient Port of Paphos

This year's excavations at the ancient port of Paphos have brought to light significant findings, including over 700 kilograms of amphora shards from the Late Roman period, dozens of inscriptions in red ink, and evidence of large port works from the time of Justinian. The work, carried out by New York University (NYU) in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities, focused on the area of Agios Georgios and the ancient cemetery. The analysis of the amphorae shows that they come from local and Cilician sources, as well as from Palestine and Gaza, while the inscriptions offer new research opportunities. The findings indicate that the port of Paphos was an important hub of trade and construction during the Roman period, with particular emphasis on the delivery of marble from Proconnesus for the construction of basilicas at Akrotiri Drepanon.
