Spain Train Tragedy: Broken Rail Link Found – Investigation Focuses on Cause

A broken rail link appears to be the cause of the train tragedy in Spain, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. The damage to the link is believed to have existed for some time and is considered a “key element” in explaining the accident. The Spanish railway manager, the Ministry of Transport, and RENFE have not yet commented on the information. The inspection of the train before the accident did not reveal any anomalies. The accident occurred near Adamuz, in the province of Cordoba, when a high-speed train derailed and collided with a passing train from the opposite direction. Both trains left the tracks. The president of Renfe described the circumstances of the accident as “strange” and stated that human error appears to be ruled out. Initial estimates suggest that the first carriages passed over the gap in the tracks without issue, but the last carriages derailed.
