Sudden Water Cut to Farmers by the Government: State Inaction and Prolonged Drought Threaten Production

The decision by the Water Development Department to completely cut off irrigation water to farmers, due to prolonged drought and almost empty reservoirs, is causing serious consequences for the primary sector. Panagrotikos Secretary-General Tasos Yapanis denounces the decision as sudden and without consultation, pointing to decades of state inaction. The water cut forces farmers to cultivate limited areas, while their financial obligations remain. There are warnings of cascading effects on agricultural production, the economy and food security, as well as risks to livestock farming. Immediate financial support is requested to ensure production and exports, such as PDO halloumi.
