Sunni Speaker Elected for New Iraqi Parliament

The new Iraqi Parliament elected Sunni official Haybat al-Halbusi as its Speaker on Monday, during its first session nearly two months after the parliamentary elections. Al-Halbusi's election is a result of the power-sharing system in Iraq, where the position of Speaker of Parliament is allocated to a Sunni official. The process of electing the Deputy Speakers, one Shia and one Kurd, has already begun. The 45-year-old Al-Halbusi is a two-time MP and has served as chairman of the parliamentary Oil and Energy Committee. The main Sunni forces had coordinated their positions before the vote, selecting Al-Halbusi as the sole candidate. According to the Constitution, Parliament must elect the President of the Republic within 30 days.
