Supreme Court to Decide on Nikos Sykas' Immunity Today

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision today regarding the request to lift the parliamentary immunity of Nikos Sykas, following an allegation of assault by his partner. Despite the withdrawal of the complaint, the Legal Service maintains that this does not affect the continuation of the case. Mr. Sykas' lawyer, Christos Pourgouridis, stated that he has no objection to the lifting of immunity, but questioned the possibility of proving the offenses without the testimony of the complainant, who has withdrawn her complaint. He argued that the concept of "victim" is legally controversial before a conviction and that the legislation aims to limit gender-based violence. The Assistant Attorney General, Savvas Angelidis, emphasized that the request is not arbitrary and that case law is clear, while a court order was also issued prohibiting the MP from approaching the victim.
