Surge in Infections and GESY System Issues Strain Healthcare

Published January 13, 2026, 14:29

Cyprus is experiencing a surge in cases of influenza and RSV following the holiday period, compounded by significant issues with the GESY (National Health Insurance System) software. The President of Personal Doctors, Mary Avraamidis, reported that the system was extremely slow and often non-functional, leading to verbal abuse towards doctors from waiting patients. Paediatrician Panagiotis Yiagkou emphasized that delays in prescribing medication could worsen patient conditions. Ms. Avraamidis recommended mask-wearing and good ventilation, urging patients to get tested for appropriate treatment. The situation is particularly challenging for children, with a significant increase in influenza A cases.
