Surge in Viruses, Increased Hospital Admissions

Published January 2, 2026, 13:30

A surge in viruses is being observed in Cyprus, leading to an increase in admissions to the Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) of public hospitals. This increase is attributed to the low temperatures driving people indoors and gatherings during the holiday season. Spokesperson for the Cyprus Public Health Insurance Organisation (CPHIO), Charalambos Charilaou, emphasized the importance of taking personal hygiene measures, such as frequent handwashing and adequate ventilation of spaces. Hospitals are prepared to manage the increase in cases, with the operation of Rapid Patient Flow Clinics for non-emergency cases. Admissions mainly concern individuals with comorbidities and elderly people with low immune systems. It is recommended to avoid gatherings and protect vulnerable groups.
