Surveillance Cameras in Cypriot Schools: Initial Assessment and Challenges

Published January 3, 2026, 09:23

In Cyprus, the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in schools is underway, with 40 schools currently covered. According to the President of the School Boards, Nikos Megalemos, the presence of the cameras has improved the security situation in schools, as perpetrators of vandalism have been identified. Installation continues in other schools, particularly in areas with frequent presence of non-students. Minor problems have been observed, such as students destroying signage, but authorities emphasize that perpetrators can be identified even if they damage the cameras. The cameras are not operational during school hours, and the duration of file storage is being considered for modification, so as not to be kept unnecessarily during school closures. Vandalism was recorded at a school without cameras during Christmas, with unknown individuals lighting fires.
