Symbolism and Grand Statements Mark the Start of the Cypriot EU Presidency

The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union began with an emphasis on symbolism and broad statements about “bridges” and “the European spirit”. The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, stated that Cyprus aspires to act as a bridge between member states and institutions, but no specific commitments or policy interventions were presented. Cyprus's geostrategic position was highlighted as an advantage, but without reference to the challenges facing the country. The start of the Presidency was marked by references to culture as a common language of Europe, however, symbolism appears to outweigh substantial policy discussion. The Deputy Minister described Nicosia as “the last divided capital of Europe”, emphasizing the need for unity.
