Syria Threatens to Bomb Kurdish Neighborhood in Aleppo

The Syrian army has warned it will resume attacks on a Kurdish area of Aleppo, as fighters refused to withdraw as stipulated in a fragile ceasefire agreement. The government and Kurdish forces have blamed each other for the collapse of the ceasefire, which aimed to merge the de facto autonomous administration and the Kurdish army into the new Syrian government. The clashes have already resulted in at least 21 deaths and the displacement of tens of thousands of residents. Despite the announcement of a ceasefire and the provision of a humanitarian corridor, Kurdish forces refused to surrender and claim they are under heavy bombardment. Turkey, which views the Kurdish forces as a terrorist organization, welcomed the Syrian government's operation. The SDF, controlling areas in northern Syria, have played a significant role in defeating Islamic State, but are linked by Ankara to the PKK.
