Taxi Drivers Threaten 24-Hour Strike over Airport App Operations

Taxi drivers in Larnaca staged a four-hour work stoppage today, protesting the “uncontrolled operation” of passenger transport applications at Larnaca Airport, as announced by POAT. The union warns that if there are no immediate actions from the authorities, a 24-hour strike will take place on January 20, followed by an indefinite strike on January 28. The taxi drivers are demanding the disconnection of the applications from Larnaca Airport, except for the province where the road service license is issued, and the strict adherence to the taxi base by all platforms. They believe that the uncontrolled operation of the applications creates unfair competition and undermines their profession. POAT accuses the authorities of inaction and demands the application of the law to restore legality. It points out that the responsibility for the consequences of the mobilizations lies with those who knew the situation and did not react. The Licensing Authority expressed surprise and concern about the mobilizations, calling on the union to reconsider its measures. At the same time, it announced that it is making efforts to mediate and change the regulatory framework, warning that the strikes may harm the economy, tourism, and the international image of Cyprus.
