The Contradiction of Nikos Christodoulides

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that all government actions aim to resolve the Cyprus issue. However, this statement contrasts with the simultaneous promotion of the trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, which, according to reports, has turned into a confrontation with Turkey, with the creation of a joint brigade and other initiatives. Although Cyprus-Israel relations are considered necessary, the continued confrontation with Turkey through this cooperation may harm Cyprus' interests. The trilateral cooperation has taken a more "hardline" path, with military planning that serves as a signal of coordination between the three countries. Cyprus' involvement in Israel-Turkey conflicts, especially on issues such as Gaza and Syria, carries risks. Discussions about Israeli air defense systems in Cyprus have provoked reactions from Turkey, with references to a "fragile balance" on the island. Cyprus needs to maintain open channels of communication with the EU, the UN, and countries in the region. Cyprus must carefully consider its interests and avoid emotionalism, especially if resolving the Cyprus issue remains a priority. The continued confrontation with Turkey, although it may serve the interests of Tel Aviv, is not in Cyprus' best interest.
