The EU's Secret Weapon That Could Change Security When NATO Isn't Enough - What is Article 42.7?

In an extreme scenario of military pressure or US intervention in Greenland, NATO may prove politically powerless for Denmark. However, European treaties provide for a lesser-known but potentially powerful mutual defense mechanism: Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty. This article stipulates that if an EU member state is subjected to armed aggression on its territory, the other member states are obliged to provide assistance and support with all the means at their disposal. Unlike Article 5 of NATO, which allows for greater national interpretation, the wording of the EU is considered by analysts to be more binding politically and legally, although it concerns a smaller military capacity. The activation would require unanimous agreement from all EU member states, which carries political risks, as countries with close ties to the US could block the process. Despite doubts due to Greenland's withdrawal from the EEC in 1985, the European Commission has clarified that Greenland, as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, is covered by Article 42.7. Activation would send a strong political and legal message, but the possibility of direct military conflict between the EU and the US is considered practically nil. Such a scenario would cause a deep political crisis of NATO credibility and could accelerate the search for alternative solutions for European defense.
