The Kremlin Now Attacks the Ecumenical Patriarchate

The Kremlin has escalated its attack on Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, accusing him of collaborating with foreign intelligence agencies and dissolving the Church, with Ukraine as the main point of contention. Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) used language reminiscent of a spy file to characterize the Patriarch. This move is part of a long-standing pattern of Russian foreign policy, where the Church is used as a tool of influence and, when that is not enough, resort is made to conspiracy theories. Russia seeks to undermine the Ecumenical Patriarchate and replace it with a “Third Rome” under the control of the Kremlin. The root of the conflict lies in the Ecumenical Patriarchate's recognition of the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2019, which angered Moscow and led to a break in communion. Patriarch Kirill has fully identified with Vladimir Putin, blessing the weapons used in Ukraine and offering “absolution of sins” to Russian soldiers. His stance has been characterized as an outrage in the history of Christianity.
