The Mystery of a Vanishing Lake

An unusual phenomenon occurred in the Waswanipi region of Quebec, where Lake Rouge disappeared completely in May 2025. The lake's waters didn't evaporate but found a new outlet, flowing into a larger neighboring lake, leaving behind dead fish and an empty bed. Experts speak of a rare "sudden lake drainage," a phenomenon usually observed in glacial lakes or due to dam collapses, but in the case of Lake Rouge, the water opened a new outflow channel. The Quebec government attributed the disappearance to natural causes, however, scientists and members of the Cree community question this simplistic explanation. The region's geology, with its altitude, soft banks, and a weak point, combined with heavy snowfall and rapid snowmelt, created the conditions for drainage. Furthermore, the role of forest fires and logging, which weakened the vegetation and banks of the lake, is emphasized, making the soil more vulnerable to collapse. Hydrologist Younes Alila explains that the more saturated the soil, the easier it collapses. For many experts, the disappearance of Lake Rouge is a warning sign of the impact of climate change and human activity on the environment. Even if the phenomenon was inevitable, they believe that human interventions significantly accelerated its development, making the situation more critical.
