The Return of Makarios and the Olive Branch – Part 5

The article examines the conditions and reactions following the events of 1974 in Cyprus concerning the return of Archbishop Makarios. Domestically, so-called “nationalists” and coup forces opposed Makarios’ return, fearing civil conflict. The pro-coup press, led by “Mesimvrini,” criticized Klerides’ presidency and threatened reactions. Simultaneously, there was intense controversy between newspapers supporting Makarios and those linked to EOKA B'. Internationally, Cyprus was at the center of the Cold War and Greek-Turkish rivalries. The US and the UK viewed Makarios with caution, while Henry Kissinger considered his return a destabilizing factor, preferring a “manageable” transitional leadership. Kissinger reportedly suggested Makarios take on a role in Greece, but the Archbishop declined, wanting to return to Cyprus. Furthermore, the article reveals an unknown aspect of the period, mentioning the reaction of then-Greek Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis to Makarios’ decision to speak at a rally in Syntagma Square. This move is said to have caused Karamanlis’ discomfort. Finally, the position of the ISOTITA Pan-Cypriot Union is highlighted, responding to statements by Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris regarding police criticism of changes to their schedules. ISOTITA states that it will not be silenced and will continue to defend the dignity of police officers and prison guards, based on law and the constitutional framework.
