The Year of the Monsters: Democracy, Populism, and Authoritarianism

The article analyzes the dangerous path taken by political figures, from democracy to populism and ultimately to authoritarianism, using Alcibiades, Octavian, and Napoleon as examples. It points out that democracy, while an ideal system, also provides the most fertile ground for the development of populism, as it offers politicians the opportunity to appeal directly to the people with pleasing messages. Populism is characterized by the use of simplistic dilemmas, scaremongering, and appeals to strong emotions such as fear and nationalism. The article warns that criticism of populism by political opponents should not be made lightly, as it is often an attempt to attract popular support themselves. Finally, it is emphasized that populism can even be used by dictators to maintain their power.
