Total Solar Eclipse to Grace Europe in 2026: Astronomical Events to Watch

Published January 1, 2026, 08:26

2026 will be a year of significant astronomical events, culminating in a total solar eclipse over Europe after 27 years. The last total solar eclipse in continental Europe was in August 1999. The 2026 eclipse will be primarily visible in Spain, where the Moon will completely cover the Sun for almost two minutes. Some northwestern regions of Greece will experience a partial eclipse, but at a small percentage. Additionally, a ring eclipse will occur on February 17, 2026, visible only in Antarctica and to a limited extent in Southern Africa and South America. Scientists anticipate that the eclipse will provide valuable opportunities to study the Sun's corona.
