Trial for the Suicide of 14-Year-Old Stylianos Continues on March 17th

The trial for the suicide of 14-year-old Stylianos will continue on March 17th at the Nicosia District Court. Today's hearing was marked by the withdrawal of the previous defense lawyer for the defendant, a social worker from the Social Welfare Services (SWS), with lawyer Viktor Akamas taking over her defense. Mr. Akamas requested time to study the evidence, as his first meeting with the defendant took place only yesterday. Mr. Akamas expressed doubts about the charges against the defendant, which concern negligence of duty. He argued that the indictment does not specify the particular legislative provision allegedly violated, pointing out that the article of the Penal Code cited does not criminalize any act without a specific violation of the law. The defense wants to know which law the defendant is alleged to have violated in order to prepare her defense. The representative of the Prosecution did not object to a short adjournment, but noted that the requested time (one and a half months) is long given the age of the case. She argued that the evidence contains the legislation defining the duties of SWS officials. The President of the Court, Pavlos Agapitos, acknowledged the complexity of the case and the large number of parties involved, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of all factors. The representative of the Prosecution informed the defense lawyer about the witnesses who will testify, concerning incidents of domestic violence.
