Trump Considers Seizing or Blocking Iran's Hormuz Island to Pressure Tehran

The Trump administration is considering seizing or blocking Iran's Hormuz Island in order to pressure Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios sources. The administration believes it cannot end the crisis in the region unless it secures free passage through the strait, which is vital for oil and gas shipping. A takeover of Hormuz, from which 90% of Iranian oil is exported, would bring US troops closer to the front lines. However, before such a move, the US military would need to further weaken Iran's military capabilities in the region. According to a White House source, about a month is needed to weaken the Iranians and use the island as a negotiating card. More troops would be needed for the operation, with three Marine units already en route to the region and the Pentagon considering sending even more. The seizure or blockade of Hormuz is considered a risky move, as it could escalate tensions in the region and lead to military conflict.
