Trump, Venezuela, and the Alarming Scenario (for Cyprus)

Deputy Professor of International Law, Aris Constantinis, commented on the US operation in Venezuela, emphasizing the complete disregard for international law by the US. He highlighted that the Trump administration did not even attempt to justify its actions based on international law, unlike previous US governments, and even Trump himself during his first term. Mr. Constantinis noted that Russia, even during its invasion of Ukraine, tried to justify its actions under international law, thus acknowledging its power. He warned that if the US actions are accepted by the international community, a new customary law rule could be created allowing the use of armed force to arrest heads of state deemed responsible for drug trafficking. However, he stressed that the creation of international law rules cannot be done unilaterally by a powerful state.
