Turkey Breaks Records in Vehicle Exports, Becoming a Global Leader

Turkey recorded record revenues from vehicle exports in 2023, reaching $41.5 billion (35.7 billion euros). This increase is due to a 4% rise in domestic production, reaching 1.42 million units. European Union countries are the main destination for Turkish vehicles, absorbing about 70% of exports. Despite the success, Turkey has not yet managed to surpass the record of 2017, when it exported 1.33 million vehicles. The slowdown in the European market and the transition to electric mobility pose significant challenges to the Turkish industry. However, new investments in passenger cars are expected, including two new models that will begin production within the year. The automotive industry remains Turkey's leading export activity, accounting for about one-sixth of the country's total exports. Turkey is a significant market for European vehicles, importing about 8% of the continent's total vehicle exports. The president of the Turkish Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD) warned that developments in the European car market will remain crucial for the country's export activity. A further weakening of the European economy could negatively impact Turkey's exports.
