Turkey Considers Nuclear Weapons Development Amidst Iran Concerns

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has left open the possibility of Turkey developing nuclear weapons, responding to concerns about Iran's nuclear ambitions. While asserting that Tehran is not building an atomic bomb, he predicted that doubts about the US commitment to its allies' security could lead to a nuclear arms race in Europe and Asia. Fidan emphasized that Ankara does not want to disrupt the balance of power in the region but acknowledged that it might be forced to follow suit. This statement comes during ongoing talks between the US and Iran regarding Tehran's nuclear program, while Turkey accuses Israel of possessing a nuclear arsenal. Fidan underscored that the development of nuclear weapons must be considered within the context of regional security and characterized the issue as a “high-level strategic” one. Despite these statements, Turkey currently has no nuclear weapons program and is a member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Furthermore, Turkey is constructing three nuclear power plants for energy production and hosts American nuclear weapons at the Incirlik Air Base, without permission to move or use them. Fidan also commented on recent airstrikes, expressing doubts about their ability to bring about regime change in Iran.
