Turkey: Hundreds of Thousands Protest in Istanbul for Gaza

Tens of thousands of people participated in a mass demonstration in Istanbul on Thursday, expressing their support for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The protesters, waving Palestinian and Turkish flags, called for an end to the violence in the Palestinian enclave, which has suffered immense destruction from the war. The mobilization, organized by more than 400 civil society organizations, included speeches and a musical performance by Lebanese singer Maher Zain. According to sources close to the Turkish police and Anadolu, around 500,000 people took part in the march. Turkey has strongly criticized the war in Gaza and has played an active role in negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The ceasefire, which came into effect in October, remains fragile, with mutual accusations of violations of the terms. At the same time, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with the population facing severe shortages of food, water and medical care. The demonstration in Istanbul is another indication of international concern about the situation in Gaza.
