UK Health Minister: "Unprecedented" Meningitis Outbreak - Claims 2 Lives

The UK Health Minister described the meningitis outbreak in the Canterbury area as "unprecedented", with 15 cases and two deaths. An additional case was reported in France, concerning a student at the University of Kent. The majority of cases are linked to the Club Chemistry nightclub. Approximately 700 doses of antibiotics have been administered preventatively to young people who may have been exposed. The two deceased were an 18-year-old student and a 21-year-old university student. Authorities are advising anyone who visited the nightclub between March 5 and 7 to receive preventative antibiotic treatment. A targeted vaccination program is planned for students. The outbreak has raised questions about the speed of response from health authorities.
