UN Calls for Immediate and Independent Investigation into Renée Goode's Death in the US

The United Nations (UN) has called for an “immediate and independent” investigation into the fatal shooting of Renée Goode in Minneapolis, USA, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent last week, an incident that has sparked widespread protests across the country. Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that the intentional use of lethal force is only justified as a last resort and exclusively when there is an immediate threat to life. The UN acknowledges the FBI investigation but stresses the need for a swift, independent, and transparent inquiry into the circumstances of the 37-year-old Goode’s death. The killing of Goode triggered a wave of mobilizations over the weekend in several US cities, including Minneapolis, New York, Los Angeles, and Boston. The US government responded by sending “hundreds” of additional federal agents to Minneapolis. Laurence urged all relevant authorities to take steps to de-escalate tensions and avoid any action or rhetoric that could lead to violence. Simultaneously, the city of Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration, denouncing operations against undocumented immigrants. Donald Trump defended the officer, while local authorities dispute the self-defense claim, citing video footage of the incident.
