UN Calls for Independent Investigation into Deaths in Iran

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for a swift and independent investigation into the deaths and violence that have occurred during the protests in Iran over the past 13 days. The investigation should respect the right of citizens to demonstrate peacefully, as enshrined in international law. Türk expressed his concern over reports of violence against protesters, including deaths and property damage. He stressed that those responsible for human rights violations must be held accountable. Furthermore, Türk expressed concern about the internet shutdown in Iran, arguing that such actions restrict freedom of expression and access to information. The internet shutdown also hinders the documentation of human rights violations and the provision of assistance to those in need. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned that the country will not back down in the face of the wave of protests. Non-governmental organizations accuse the authorities of using violence against protesters, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people since December 28th.
