UN Chief Calls on Israel to Reverse Ban on NGOs Entering Gaza

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the Israeli government to “reverse” its decision to ban access to the Gaza Strip for dozens of international humanitarian organizations. Mr. Guterres expressed his deep concern over the suspension of NGO operations in the occupied Palestinian territories, emphasizing that they are “essential” for providing life-saving humanitarian aid. The Israeli decision, according to the Secretary-General, raises the risk of undermining the fragile progress made during the ceasefire. Furthermore, it slows down the entry of critical supplies, such as food, medical equipment, and shelter materials, worsening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israeli authorities justify the ban on “security” grounds, requiring organizations to submit lists of their employees. However, several NGOs characterize this requirement as illegal and express fears of monitoring Palestinian workers. Among the organizations affected by the decision are Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Care, World Vision, and Oxfam. This move raises concerns about further delays in humanitarian aid, given the massive destruction Gaza has suffered after two years of war and the urgent need of its residents for shelter, healthcare, and food.
