UN on Venezuela: 'Flagrant Violation of Charter Constituting a Threat'

An open meeting of the UN Security Council is underway on the topic of 'Threats to International Peace and Security'. Colombia, a Non-Permanent Member of the Council, called for an urgent session following the US military operation in Venezuela on January 3, 2026, which resulted in the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Venezuela also sent a letter to the Council requesting an urgent meeting, supported by China and Russia. Deputy Secretary-General of the UN Rosemary DiCarlo briefed the Security Council, stating that 'US forces operated throughout Caracas and in the northern states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira', while 'the extent of casualties resulting from these actions remains unknown'. Venezuela has characterized the US action as a 'military attack' and a 'flagrant violation of the UN Charter'. DiCarlo expressed concern about the potential escalation of instability and called on all parties to engage in an inclusive dialogue.
