UN: Progress in Political Talks, Concerns Remain Over Security

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is proposing a 12-month renewal of the UNFICYP mission, until January 31, 2027. In his report, he expresses concern over violations within and around the buffer zone, including the construction of military installations aimed at altering the status quo. He also voices concern about the situation in Varosha. At the same time, he notes a new dynamic in the Cyprus negotiations, due to the assumption of duties by the new Turkish Cypriot leader and the increased engagement of the leaders. However, he points out that no substantial progress has been made in de-escalation, as there has been no demilitarization along the ceasefire line. Guterres states that UNFICYP plays a critical role in maintaining stability, but its effectiveness is limited by the lack of full cooperation from both sides. He also highlights the practice of concealing military positions within civilian structures, which raises serious concerns. The report also refers to the impasse regarding the Pyla area, calling on the parties to cooperate to find a solution.
