UNFICYP in Focus: Guterres Raises Alarm over Violations in the Dead Zone

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, recommends the renewal of the UNFICYP mission for 12 months, until January 31, 2027. He expresses concern over violations in the dead zone, particularly due to the construction of military installations seeking to alter the military status quo, as well as the situation in Varosha. Despite the new dynamics in the Cyprus issue, he points to the lack of progress in de-escalation and the increase in military presence along the ceasefire line. He emphasizes the critical role of UNFICYP in maintaining stability, but also the need for full cooperation from both sides.
