US and Japan to Strengthen Defense Cooperation

Japan and the United States have agreed to strengthen their defense cooperation, including joint production of defense equipment, primarily missiles, and expanding their military presence in waters southwest of Japan. This agreement comes amid rising tensions in the region, with China intensifying pressure on Japan and Taiwan. The two countries pledged to expand cooperation on supply chains and critical minerals, as well as to conduct more complex and practical joint military exercises. Strengthening defense in the southwestern region of Japan, where the island of Okinawa is located with US military bases, is a priority. Japan has significantly increased its defense spending, approving a record budget in December. The move is seen as 'pragmatic realism' and 'common sense' by the US side, as it unites the vital national interests of the two countries. This agreement marks a further tightening of the Japan-US alliance in the face of challenges posed by China in the region and highlights the importance of maintaining peace and stability in Asia.
