US Commandos Seize Venezuelan Tanker Near Russian Warships

US commandos have seized the tanker Marinera, which was sailing under a Russian flag, after a two-week pursuit in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel is reportedly linked to Iran and is part of the US campaign to pressure maritime transport connected to Venezuela. The seizure was carried out with a warrant from a US federal court and is supported by the Trump administration, aiming to protect the security and stability of the Western Hemisphere. During the operation, Russian military vessels, including a submarine, were present in the wider area. Russia has protested the seizure, stating that the ship was in international waters and acting in accordance with international maritime law, calling on Western countries to respect freedom of navigation. The ship had been renamed from Bella-1 to Marinera and had changed its flag to Russian. The operation was conducted by the US Coast Guard and armed forces. The seizure of the tanker has caused tension in the region and highlights the increasing involvement of Russia in maritime transport linked to Venezuela, as well as the US determination to enforce sanctions and limit activities it deems threatening to its interests.
