Venezuela: US House Speaker Supports Holding Elections Soon

US House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his support for holding elections in Venezuela "soon," following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. He believes that holding elections is necessary to stabilize the country's economy and overall situation. Johnson's statement came after a closed-door meeting with the leadership of American diplomacy and the military. President Trump, on the other hand, ruled out the possibility of elections within the next thirty days, emphasizing the need to "stabilize" the country first. Delcy Rodríguez, the new interim president of Venezuela, has been threatened by Trump with a "worse" fate than Maduro if she does not comply with US demands, particularly regarding access to the country's oil reserves. Johnson assured that no deployment of US troops to Venezuela is expected, but "coercion" will be exerted on the new government. The operation that led to Maduro's capture was carried out without the approval of Congress, a fact criticized by the opposition. However, Johnson assured that the operation was legal. Senator Chuck Schumer, the leader of the minority in the Senate, described Trump's plan as "vague and unsatisfactory."
