Von der Leyen: Cyprus Reunification Remains EU Priority

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the reunification of Cyprus remains an absolute priority for the European Union. Speaking at the inauguration of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, she linked the issue of division to the fundamental principles of the EU, such as cooperation over confrontation and law over violence, principles she noted apply even to Greenland. Von der Leyen expressed hope that 2026 could bring renewed momentum to the reunification effort, reiterating the EU's commitment to support the process led by the United Nations. She also recalled the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the EU's special envoy for Cyprus, highlighting the importance the EU attaches to the issue. She emphasized that Cyprus, due to its own experience with division, is ideally positioned to lead the EU Presidency, as it embodies the value of transforming conflict into cooperation. Cyprus, she stated, understands the importance of peace and stability in the region, as well as the need for security in an uncertain world. Furthermore, von der Leyen echoed President Christodoulides' call for a united and solidarity-based Europe, recognizing Cyprus's leadership role in providing humanitarian aid and responding to crises, such as the recent assistance to Gaza and the involvement of Cypriot firefighters in combating wildfires.
