European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the reunification of Cyprus remains an 'absolute priority' for the European Union, linking the island's division to fundamental European principles. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency, she emphasized that the EU will do everything in its power to support the process led by the United Nations and expressed hope that 2026 could bring 'renewed momentum' towards a reunited Cyprus. Von der Leyen recalled her decision to appoint Johannes Hahn as the EU Special Envoy for Cyprus, highlighting the importance the issue holds in Brussels. She noted that Cyprus, like other parts of the EU, understands the consequences of division, but refuses to let this division define its future. Comparing the situation in Cyprus to that of Greenland, von der Leyen stressed that the principles of the EU apply equally to all regions. She praised Cyprus for its geostrategic position and its role in promoting peace and stability in the region, as well as its humanitarian aid to Gaza and the response of its firefighters. The President of the European Commission described Cyprus as a country that embodies the best elements of Europe, combining tradition with innovation. She referred to the development of Nicosia as a hub for tech startups, where artificial intelligence is being developed 'in the shadow of Byzantine churches'.
