WSJ: Trump Considers Supporting Iranian Factions to Overthrow Regime

Donald Trump appears to be considering supporting armed groups in Iran that could overthrow the regime, according to U.S. officials cited by the Wall Street Journal. Trump has already spoken with Kurdish leaders in Iran and is considering supporting other local leaders who could benefit from the weakness of Tehran. This move could turn Iranian factions into ground forces supported by the U.S. This idea comes after the recent attacks by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, where Trump had called on the Iranian people to rise up and “take power.” White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt stated that Trump has spoken with regional partners but has not yet made a final decision on providing support to groups opposing the regime. Trump’s approach is considered risky, as it could lead to supporting groups with different goals. The Kurds have significant forces along the Iraq–Iran border, while Israel has bombed positions in Iran, suggesting potential preparation for a Kurdish advance. Trump shared on social media an opinion article from the Washington Post arguing that a U.S. invasion is not necessary, as “the Iranian people are the force on the ground.”
