“We’ll Lock Them Up and Leave” – Shock from Parents Over Day Centers for People with Disabilities: On the Brink of Collapse

Day centers for people with disabilities in Cyprus are at a critical point, with parents warning of closure due to abandonment by the state and gaps in the disability bill under discussion. The president of the Pan-Cypriot Organization of Associations of Parents of Children with Special Needs, Christos Augustinos, stated that the centers are ready to close and that parents will hand over the keys to the state. Parents complain that they were not involved in the consultation of the bill and that it does not cover critical needs, such as early childhood intervention. They emphasize the need for specialized therapists and educators from the early stages of life, as well as the lack of support for the centers themselves, which operate thanks to the sacrifices of families. The problem of underfunding was also highlighted by the President of the Republic when an extension of the school attendance of children with disabilities was requested due to the inability of the day centers to cope. Despite the observations, the discussion is leading to an article-by-article examination, leaving out the requests for early intervention and strengthening of structures. The Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of the Child has also pointed out serious shortcomings in the bill, especially regarding children with disabilities. The situation is dramatic, with examples such as the 71-year-old woman with intellectual disability who is cared for by her 91-year-old mother due to lack of structures.
