When 'Democracy' Comes with Kidnapping and Oil

Donald Trump announced that the United States would "take over" Venezuela, following a military operation that led to the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, with the intention of trying them in New York. This move, beyond questioning Venezuela's sovereignty, is directly linked to the interest of American companies in exploiting the country's vast oil resources. Washington justifies the intervention with arguments such as "liberation from dictatorship" and the "war on drugs", however, the history of Latin America shows a recurring trend of US intervention in governments seeking control of their natural resources. The charges of drug trafficking against Maduro are considered convenient and selectively applied. The international community has reacted with mixed feelings, with the UN warning of a violation of international law and other countries condemning the US operation as a blatant display of power.
