When Respect for Teachers is No Longer Taken for Granted

The article addresses the gradual erosion of respect for the teaching profession and its practitioners, particularly in Cyprus following discussions on teacher evaluation. The school environment has changed, with teachers facing increased demands and challenges, such as large classes, diverse student populations, and the influence of social media. This leads to a greater need for behavior management and less time for teaching. Furthermore, the devaluation of the teaching profession is reinforced by public narratives that often portray teachers as part of the problem rather than the solution. Questioning of professional competence and a lack of institutional support create a climate of insecurity and professional burnout. However, it is emphasized that teachers also have a responsibility to maintain respect through pedagogical competence, continuous training, and fostering trusting relationships with students. Respect is not imposed but built through consistency, fairness, and professionalism. Strengthening the prestige of teachers requires a collective effort from schools, families, the state, and civil society. Teachers need an environment where they can showcase their talent without obstacles or threats, promoting critical thinking and engagement with social reality.
