Why Tree Trunks are Painted White in Spring

In spring, it is common to see tree trunks painted white. This practice, known as whitewashing, is not merely decorative but an effective method of protecting trees. The white paint reflects sunlight, regulating the temperature of the trunk and protecting it from sudden fluctuations that cause cracks and facilitate the development of fungi and diseases. Additionally, lime acts as a natural insecticide, preventing the appearance of pests such as aphids. To be effective, whitewashing requires cleaning the trunk of moss and lichens before applying the lime mixture, clay, and water (or whey). The application should be done before the buds open.
