Why Turkey Fears the Fall of the Islamic Regime in Iran

Turkey is closely monitoring the crisis in Iran and the potential consequences of a possible collapse of the Islamic regime. While Western countries may see such a development as an opportunity, Turkey fears the strengthening of Kurdish movements in Iran, which could create a “Kurdish arc” threatening its national security. Furthermore, a post-theocratic Tehran, friendly to the West, could alter the balance of power in the region, limiting Turkey's influence. Ankara is also concerned about potential disruptions to economic and energy ties with Iran, as well as mass refugee flows. However, some analysts believe that a weakening of Iranian influence could offer Turkey opportunities in the Caucasus and Central Asia. These benefits are considered limited and uncertain. Turkish diplomacy, under Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, is moving cautiously, avoiding open support for protests in Iran. Turkey seeks to maintain a dialogue with all parties, in order to protect its interests and prevent destabilization of the region. The situation in Iran remains fluid and Turkey is on alert.
