Zelensky: “It is possible for the war to end during the Cypriot Presidency”

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated in Nicosia that it is possible for the war in Ukraine to end during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. He emphasized the importance of Ukraine's accession to the EU, noting that Cyprus, despite its division, has an equal voice in European institutions. Zelensky thanked President Christodoulides for his support and expressed hope that the Cypriot Presidency would promote Ukraine's European path, including the opening of negotiating chapters. Furthermore, the Ukrainian President called for the strengthening of sanctions against Russia, mentioning a new package that will target the “shadow fleet” of Russia. He underlined the need for an effective mechanism to manage the €90 billion support package for Ukraine, in order to address the challenges and strengthen the resilience of his country and Europe as a whole. Zelensky's statement comes at a critical time for Ukraine, which continues to face the Russian invasion. The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, which will begin in 2026, will have the opportunity to play a significant role in resolving the crisis and supporting Ukraine. Zelensky stressed that Cyprus, despite its small size, is an example of what it means to be part of Europe, where every nation matters and every free country deserves to belong to the European family. Cyprus, with its experience of division, can contribute to promoting peace and stability in Europe.
