Zohran Mamdani Sworn In as Mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in today as the Mayor of New York City, marking a historic moment as he is the first Muslim to hold the office in the city. The swearing-in took place in two stages: a brief ceremony at a subway station and an official ceremony at the steps of City Hall, presided over by Senator Bernie Sanders. Mamdani took his oath on the Quran, a copy belonging to African American historian Arturo Schomburg, and emphasized the city's importance to working people. The choice of the Old City Hall subway station for the first swearing-in symbolizes, according to him, the city's beauty and potential to transform lives. His term officially begins on January 1st, but the tradition of a small swearing-in ceremony immediately after midnight was maintained. Mamdani raised a record $2.6 million for the transition and celebrations, with contributions from nearly 30,000 donors. His team has characterized the inauguration as "An Inauguration of a New Era". Following the swearing-in, the new mayor will move from his Astoria apartment, protected from rent increases by the city's rent stabilization program, to Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayors of New York City. The inauguration is expected to be attended by approximately 4,000 guests at City Hall, while tens of thousands will be able to watch it live through screens set up along Broadway.
