Zelensky: Washington Proposed 'Robust' Security Guarantees for 15 Years

Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the United States has proposed “robust” security guarantees to Ukraine for a period of 15 years, with the possibility of extension. The proposal was made during Zelensky’s meeting with Donald Trump, where the Ukrainian president requested a longer duration for the guarantees. According to Zelensky, the security guarantees are a prerequisite for lifting the martial law in effect in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. He stated that he would like the guarantees to last 30, 40, or even 50 years, while Trump reportedly pledged to consider this possibility. Donald Trump, after the meeting, assessed that the two sides are closer than ever to an agreement to end the war, without providing specific details. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov agreed with Trump’s assessment that the talks are in their final stages. Zelensky mentioned that the possibility of creating a security mechanism for Ukraine, similar to Article 5 of NATO, which provides for mutual support in the event of an attack, was discussed. He also discussed a plan for economic support for the reconstruction of Ukraine, with the participation of American companies and a possible free trade agreement. The presence of “international troops” in Ukraine is also considered a necessary security guarantee.
