A violent brawl broke out between high school girls at a Gymnasium in the Paphos District, Cyprus, with the involvement of family members. The Communication Officer of the Police Headquarters, Christodoulos Konsolos, stated that the incident occurred during class and continued after school dismissal. The clash was described as an unfortunately common phenomenon in Cyprus. Mr. Konsolos emphasized that school violence is a serious pedagogical and social issue, which often extends beyond the school grounds and involves students outside the classrooms. He highlighted the crucial role of the school in addressing violence through dialogue and immediate intervention. Giorgos Koutsidis, Deputy Director of Secondary General Education, confirmed the increase in delinquency, especially in Gymnasiums, where 90% of incidents occur. He expressed the view that violence has been a phenomenon observed in Cyprus for years. Mr. Koutsidis assured that those resorting to violent acts will be punished, while reiterating the condemnation of any form of violence. This incident highlights the need to strengthen measures to prevent and address school violence in Cyprus.
