A President Who Talks About a Solution, But Builds a Deadlock
The article criticizes the President's policy on the Cyprus issue. The President, while talking about a “window of opportunity” and a resumption of talks, sets as a prerequisite the “return” of Turkish Cypriots to the Republic of Cyprus, which cancels out the very basis of the negotiations. The author argues that this stance is contradictory and mocks the international community and the UN. Negotiations are based on the joint search for a new constitutional order by two communities, not on the return of one side to the other. Furthermore, the President is calling for the abolition of fundamental arrangements that formed the Republic of Cyprus, such as the Treaties of Guarantee, Alliance, and Establishment, as well as the British Bases. This, according to the author, opens a dangerous window and challenges the continuity of the Republic of Cyprus. Finally, the article points out the inactivity of the Bicommunal Technical Committees, which should be preparing the ground for negotiations. Overall, the article presents a negative picture of President Christodoulides' policy, characterizing it as a deadlock and dangerous.
