Cyprus' New Integration Strategy for Migrants: Breaking Down Ghettos

Cyprus is implementing its first National Integration Strategy for Migrants 2025-2029, accompanied by a detailed Action Plan, in response to a growing influx of migrants. The strategy aims to facilitate the smooth integration of migrants into Cypriot society, prevent the formation of ghettos, and address the social and economic challenges associated with migration. The Deputy Minister of Migration, Nicolas Ioannidis, emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive approach, as fragmented integration leads to marginalization, the shadow economy, and social gaps. The Action Plan includes intensive language courses for asylum seekers, free Greek language courses at all levels, the adoption of the HelpRefugeesWork.org platform to facilitate job searching, childcare programs to support the employment of migrant women, and cultural orientation courses. Furthermore, a mapping of areas where migrants live and work will be conducted to improve coordination and the effective provision of services. The Deputy Minister clarifies that the strategy is not an 'open door' policy, but an effort to regulate and manage migration with rules and measurable results. He also warns that those who do not comply with the rules will be dealt with strictly. According to the Deputy Minister, the Republic of Cyprus is entering a new phase of migration policy, more mature and institutionally protected. The new strategy is a response to the increasing need for a comprehensive management of migration, which takes into account both the needs of migrants and the concerns of local communities. The successful implementation of the strategy is expected to contribute to social cohesion, economic development, and the security of Cyprus, addressing migration as an ongoing condition that requires continuous adaptation and improvement.
