Erhurman: No Turkish Cypriot Approval Needed for Greek Cypriot Unilateral Measures

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman stated that no approval from the Turkish Cypriot side is required for any unilateral measures taken by the Greek Cypriot side. This statement was made in response to reports regarding President Christodoulides' intentions to take action in the areas of health and economy to benefit the Turkish Cypriot community. Mr. Erhurman referred to previous discussions regarding trade through the Green Line regulation, noting that the Turkish Cypriot side has requested the removal of certain practices hindering trade. He also expressed reservations about President Christodoulides' proposal to waive VAT on goods transported from the free areas to the occupied territories, believing that this would create a competitive disadvantage for Turkish Cypriot producers. Mr. Erhurman proposed a balanced approach, where both sides would apply the same VAT rule, namely no tax on goods circulating between the two communities. Answering a question about accepting Christodoulides' proposal, Erhurman stated that he does not accept it, as he believes it distorts the logic of the Green Line regulation and creates unequal treatment.
