AKEL in European Parliament: Corruption and Rule of Law Threaten European Credibility

Members of the European Parliament, during a discussion on the program of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, called on Cyprus to promote Europe's strategic autonomy and to work towards resolving the Cyprus issue with the support of the EU. At the same time, they stressed the need to address issues of corruption and respect for the rule of law. Giorgos Georgiou (Left – GUE/NGL) pointed out that the priorities of the EU are determined by the larger member states and its policies by the private sector, while resolving the Cyprus issue is essential for stability in the region. Manfred Weber (European People's Party) stated that Cyprus is taking over the Presidency at a critical time, when a strong Europe is needed, and can act as a bridge to the wider region. Kostas Mavridis (Socialists and Democrats) emphasized the need for a holistic approach to the challenges facing the EU. Other MEPs referred to issues such as migration, geopolitical developments and the need to simplify procedures, while Michalis Hadjipantela stressed that resolving the Cyprus issue is a top priority and requires the decisive contribution of the EU.
